Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba on Sunday announced his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election scheduled for Aug. 26.

"I am officially announcing today that

I am a candidate," declared Bongo in a speech given in the special economic zone of Nkok, about 20 kilometers from Libreville, the Gabonese capital.

Ali Bongo, 64, has ruled Gabon since 2009. He won the presidential election organized after the death of his father Omar Bongo Ondimba, who ruled the country for 41 years.

He was re-elected in 2016 for a second term.

According to a calendar recently published by the Gabonese Election Center (CGE), on Aug. 26, Gabonese people will go to the polls for the presidential, legislative and local elections.
