The Royal Thai Navy corvette HTMS Sukhothai (FS-442) sank in the Gulf of Thailand at 11:30 p.m. local time on Sunday following a loss of
power and subsequent flooding of the ship, the navy said in a statement.
The ship was on patrol 30 kilometers from the port in Bang Saphan district, central Thailand, when strong waves caused water to enter the electrical systems of the ship, resulting in power failure and loss of control, while water entering the hull resulted in the ship tilting, the navy explained in the statement.
Seventy-eight of 106 sailors have been rescued and 28 are still in the water, the navy said, adding that three are in a critical condition.
