The Sydney Opera House was lit up from 6:00 p.m., while the Central Station Clock Tower also went gold and the lighting inside the Central Station Concourse shone green and gold in tribute.
In addition, Sydneysiders could catch glimpses of other buildings glittering in the same color palette, including the State Library, the Art Gallery of NSW and the Luna Park.
Messages of support, such as "Go, Matildas," were displayed across screens on the transport network including the Sydney Metro and train stations, buses, light rail, and on ferry wharves, as well as across more than 100 Service NSW centers.
After finishing first in Group B, Australia took on Denmark on Monday night for a berth in the quarterfinals. The match drew more than 70,000 spectators to Stadium Australia located in the Sydney Olympic Park.
"We couldn't be prouder of the Matildas making it through to the final 16 and finishing at the top of their group for the first time," said Premier of New South Wales Chris Minns.
"The World Cup has brought our city and state alive. We are taking this even further by turning NSW green and gold to cheer on the mighty Matildas," he added.
