Warner Bros. Pictures' fantasy comedy "Barbie" won its third consecutive weekend in North American theaters with an estimated three-day cume of 53 million U.S. dollars, showed figures from the measurement firm
The live-action film, directed by American female filmmaker Greta Gerwig, has grossed 459.4 million dollars in the United States and Canada for a global total of 1.031 billion dollars through Sunday. It is the first film directed solely by a woman to cross the billion-dollar mark globally.
Based on the iconic Barbie fashion dolls, "Barbie" features an all-star cast including Oscar-nominees Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
"Meg 2: The Trench," a co-production between the United States and China, came in second with 30 million dollars on its opening weekend in North America.
The shark thriller, presented by Warner Bros. Pictures and China's CMC Pictures, is the sequel to 2018's box office hit "The Meg." Directed by Ben Wheatley, the film stars British actor Jason Statham and Chinese actor Wu Jing, among others.
"Meg 2: The Trench" was the No. 1 film of the weekend worldwide. It earned 112 million dollars from 75 international markets, including around 54 million dollars from the Chinese mainland.
Rounding out the Top 3, Universal Pictures' biographical drama "Oppenheimer," directed by Christopher Nolan, took in 28.7 million dollars on its third weekend for a North American cume of 228.6 million dollars to date.
