The Shanghai Hanfu Copyright Center showcased innovative Hanfu designs during its maiden appearance at ChinaJoy 2023, which concluded in Shanghai on Monday.
Established by the Shanghai Copyright Bureau at Donghua University,
One of the works on show was made by Wang Jian from Donghua University's Shanghai International Fashion Creative Institute. This particular piece featured traditional motifs like jade rabbits and auspicious lions that were given a modern and cartoonish treatment.
"Traditional culture should not be confined to museums but also actively embraced and innovated by the youth," said Wang, who visited various museums in Shanghai to source for materials and information during the preparation period.
"By making Hanfu designs accessible, the initiative aims to bring traditional Chinese culture closer to the youth, blending digital entertainment and creative design. The collaboration with over a hundred professional colleges in China is aimed at enhancing the impact of traditional culture among young people," said Shen Jie, head of the Shanghai Hanfu Copyright Center and Deputy Director of Donghua University's Shanghai International Fashion Innovation Center.
According to a report by Tencent Research Institute, the market for games featuring traditional Chinese elements has surpassed 30 billion yuan ($4.2 billion).
The report also noted that this segment has become an indispensable part of the Chinese gaming market, and reflects a growing interest in traditional themes and aesthetics.
