Jiang Qiulian, the mother of a Chinese student who was stabbed to death outside her apartment in Japan in 2016, announced on Monday she would donate the entire compensation she had

received from her daughter's former roommate to a volunteer association based in Qingdao, Shandong province.

In a video shared on Jiang's personal Weibo account, it was revealed that she signed a donation contract amounting to 696,000 yuan ($97,000) with the Shuguang Public Welfare Volunteer Association of Jimo district, where her late daughter had previously served as a volunteer.

Reflecting on the time since her daughter's death, Jiang expressed gratitude for the immense help and support she had received. She expressed her desire to perpetuate the kindness and her daughter's aspiration for volunteering through the donation.

She firmly believed that the association possessed high credibility and would utilize every penny of the funds to assist financially disadvantaged students in pursuing higher education.

Jiang received the compensation from Liu Nuanxi, her daughter's former roommate.

The dispute between Jiang and Liu began on Nov 3, 2016, when Jiang Ge, 24, was stabbed to death in the hallway outside her apartment in Tokyo by Chen Shifeng, Liu's ex-boyfriend.

In 2017, a Tokyo court found Chen guilty of killing Jiang and sentenced him to 20 years in prison.

Jiang Qiulian was dissatisfied with the ruling and said Liu was also responsible for her daughter's death because she locked her daughter out of the apartment, putting her in a position to be attacked. She also expressed anger about the misinformation that Liu posted about Jiang Ge on the microblogging platform Sina Weibo.

In 2019, Jiang Qiulian filed a lawsuit against Liu, asking for 2 million yuan in compensation.

The Chengyang District People's Court in Shandong and later the Qingdao Intermediate People's Court in Shandong agreed that Liu was at fault and that she should bear the civil punishment because she had not informed Jiang Ge of the potential danger posed by Chen, who had intimidated Liu previously, nor had she taken Jiang Ge's safety into account when she locked her out of the residence.

On Tuesday, Jiang Qiulian revealed that she had received a notice from the Shandong High People's Court indicating that Liu had filed an appeal for a retrial.
